“Being black in the United States and being a punk are both largely contradictions. Navigating life as a black nonbinary person means wearing an invisible coat each time you enter the public, “they don’t know who I really am” it says. Being punk let me put on another costume another contradiction. The difference is people know what I am, they see me, and I know I exist because I see people see me. I see them turn when the chains and rings on my waist dangle, and they hear my boots batter the pavement. And it doesn’t matter if they are offended by the appearance of me. It matters that they saw me as I see them.”
